There are many options when it comes to camping on multi-day trips. The options include National Forest camping, several private riverside campgrounds, and the Shenandoah River State Park. The facilities in these camps run from very primitive to full service. Listed below are two categories of campgrounds (new and old) and there location on the river.
New Campgrounds
Low Water Bridge Campground - located on the west side of the river off of Rt. 613 in Bentonville, Va. The camp is on river left between mile marker 28 and 28.8, just downstream from the low water bridge. Facilities include individual campsites as well as group campsites, water, picnic tables, a few grills, flush toilets, and showers. There is a small camp store for those last minute items. Guests can spot their cars at the camp before the trip. Guests that are taking a river trip with Front Royal Canoe should contact Front Royal Canoe for reservations. People not taking a river trip should call the camp directly at 540-635-7277.
River Right Campground - located inside the Shenandoah
River
State Park, which is 8 miles south of Front Royal on US Rt. 340.
The
camp is on river right just before mile marker 32, four miles
downstream
from low water bridge. Primitive facilities include well marked
individual
campsites and well marked group campsites, water, fire rings, and vault
toilets. This campground is open to the public as well as
outfitter
guests on multi-day trips. Guests can spot their cars at the camp
before the trip. All Virginia State Parks have a no alcohol
policy
and this new state park will enforce it to the limit of the law.
Please
respect this new park and obey their rules and regulations. Guests
should
reserve sites with the park directly at 800-933-PARK.
Old Campgrounds
National Forest Campsites - located at mile markers 6, 8 to 9, 12 to 14.5, 16 to 19, and 24 to 25. All campsites are on river left. Sites are canoe in only - no vehicle access. Facilities are very primitive - nothing is provided. The one exception to this is the campsite at Moody's Bottom, which has a vault toilet. Please use "Leave No Trace" skills. Pack it in - pack it out. Burn all paper products - bury solid human waste. Guests can not make reservations for National Forest camping - camping is first come first served. JR's Campground - Located south of Bentonville, Va on US Rt. 340. The camp is on river right at mile marker 13. Primitive facilities includes pit toilets and water. Guests can spot their cars at the camp before the trip. No dogs are permited. Please pack your trash out. A fee of $15.00 per car per night is charged by the camp owner. The campground operates as a first come - first served facility. No reservations accepted. No phone number available. Click here to see the River Map
